Starting Out
Hello Everyone,
Today I will be discussing the project that I am currently working on with my peers which is the topic of Identity, representation, and the media. I and my peers decided to discuss the following topics: the LGBTQ+ community, toxic masculinity, and feminism as well as racism and how these topics are represented in the media as well as their impact in media. In this, we split those topics for us to research information on and what topic I got is how the LGBTQ+ community is represented in the media and the impacts the LGBTQ+ community have in the media.
As I have said I will be talking about how the LGBTQ+
community is represented
in the media, as well as their impacts in media. As of right now, I have only
found my finding on how the LGBTQ+ community is represented in media and from
what I have found is that according to one website called Seat Up that
statistics from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has
brought some welcome news for the LGBTQ+ community. It is said in the article,
In their annual “Where We Are On TV 2019” report, they found that out of 882 TV
characters 90 from the LGBTQ+ community were represented (LGBTQ+ Representation
in the media: Today and Yesterday-seatup.com). To which I have noticed in movies
and series that I have watched. In the same article, it says that at 10.2% this
exceeded GLAAD’s inclusivity target of 10% which is a really good thing because
at least now there is some type of representation within the LGBTQ+ community.
represented (LGBTQ+ Representation in the media: Today and Yesterday-seatup.com).
38 of the character were transgender people (mainly transgender actors) of
which 31 were played. This level of media representation is a far cry from the
early 20th century where people from the LGBTQ+ community were
hardly featured at all. When they were represented, the media was selected and constructed
to reinforce harmful stereotypes. For example, gay, lesbian, bisexual or
transgender people might be portrayed as looking or acting differently to
everyone else, reinforcing the widespread cultural belief of the time they were
abnormal (LGBTQ+ Representation in the media: Today and Yesterday-seatup.com).
This statement in my opinion is evident as before the term gay for me at least
was not taught to me and I’m guessing my parents as well. As for the impacts I
have yet to find any as there is a lot to search for in this topic.
