Production Process

Hello everyone in today’s blog I will be talking about production process and how you can organise effectively as you get started on group projects. I this blog I will be discussing the different stages of the production process and different activities that take place in each stage.  There are several different production models used, depending on what kind of media you are creating, however, most media production processes can be loosely divided into 3 stages.  These are pre-production, production, and post-production, the traditional production process.  In some industries, such as filmmaking, these stages are highly defined, but in other digital media environments, these three stages can often overlap a bit. In some media design processes, you’ll apply a model with four, five, or more stages, but generally, these can still be broadly mapped onto some part of the traditional production process. The video that I have used as a reference that can hopefully help understand these components.

What I think Design Thinking is that when you are thinking for an idea for a design and how to make it look better for me as well as the audience. But according to one video by AJ&Smart, he said that design thinking is a philosophy and set of tools to help solve problems creatively. He also mentions that there are five main steps which are empathise, define, create(ideate), prototype and test, in these steps he explains why each step are important and how it can essentially help make the product better. With empathise, it means that you must understand what the client wants you to design, you can do this by doing interviews, creating personas, etc. Define is basically breaking those interviews down and coming to conclusion about what the users need based on the interviews. To ideate, is the step where you are coming up with ideas, basically brainstorming for potential matches for the product. A prototype is when you make a kind of “fake” product and this is when testing comes to play, in the testing phase people try it out and the good thing about this is that you get feedback from actual people that are testing it out. In the next video about film production, the YouTuber that goes by FiveMinuteFilmSchool said that there are three stages which are pre-production, production which is also known as principal photography and post-production (FiveMinuteFilmSchool: Jon Micheal-Jan 13, 2014). As for what each stage do for post-production I would think that this is where they will prepare for the film/documentary so like scripting, hiring crews and actors and looking for a place to film. Principal photography/production is when they do the actual work and post-production is where they do the finishing touches.

In making a documentary, the YouTuber that goes Science Filmmaking Tips mentioned to us that we should ask ourselves that “what is the idea that you want to make a film about” and think about the audience “what will it be about? who are the audience that you are addressing this documentary to? How will you narrate this story? Do they know the topic? How can you make it better than the others?” (Science Filmmaking Tips- May 23, 2018)

In general, all of these elements that I have talked about are important in their own ways.
